I haven't been working on outboards long enough to know all the little tricks so here is my problem. I am working on a early 70's Johnson. It wouldn't start and if it did it ran for about 10 seconds and quits. I went through the electrical and it looked good and tested okay. I rebuilt the carb and now it tests great. So I have a good spark and a fuel. However the motor is still not starting. While playing around with it I found that if I set a full choke it will turn over and then if I just barely take the choke off it runs great, its responsive. I ran it in a barrel for a good 5 minutes at different speeds and to warm it up. However if I take the choke off any further then "barely" it quits on me. The only thing I can think of is that the fuel filter diaphrams are stuck together or something and when I put the choke on it causes enough suction to pull the diaphram apart. Does this sound logical? I don't want to just go out and start buying new parts until I know what parts I need. Any help would be great.

I have a 1973 johnson 65 horse in really nice shape. What oil should I be burning in it and should I be putting lead additive in the gas?
