TOM: Glad I found you! Rescued the above-referenced Johnson from Dad's garage in southeastern Alabama. It's enroute to my garage in So. Cal. I believe it has not been used for 40+ years. I could crank with starter cord and it seems to have good compression (Dad always put oil in cylinders at end of season before storage). It had some fuel in tank but not sure what I'll find in carb (he always shut off fuel so we'd gently coast into dock). After pouring fluid out noticed a lot of waxy gum inside and around threads/base of cap. What's a good way to dissolve/remove? I will be consulting your site for step-by-step restoration. Have fond memories of this motor. As a boy, accompanied Dad on many duck hunts on Chesapeake Bay (a Johnson functioning like an Evinrude Ducktwin!). This old Johnson always was reliable. It also powered a row boat for pleasure, trolling and fishing during summer vacations in Michigan. I remember the motor looked brand new when he bought it used in Little Rock, AR about 1953. Aside from a few dents in cowling it still looks that way. THanks..jaybee

Thanks for visiting. These days you should look for an oil that has the "TCW-3" specification. There are "TCW-2" and earlier specifications but the newer blend lubricates better and leaves less carbon in the motor. I believe TCW-3 has been out for 10 years or so. I usually use the Evinrude/Johnson 2 Stroke Outboard Motor Oil which I usually get at Walmart. There are synthetic oils out there and there is much debate on the boating forum at http://iboats.com over whether or not it is worth the extra cost. If you don't care about price, synthetic is probably better. Also the 2 stroke motors do not depend on lead in the gasoline so there is no need for any kind of addetive. I use 87 octain gas. Don't by premix at a marina because you don't know what you are getting and it is way too expensive.
