i have an 1952 johnson seahorse. somebody has damaged the threads on the upper port where the top spark plug goes .do i need to get a new head or can i use a heli-coil, bigger plug.any suggestions would greatly be appreciated

Look at the pictures of the completed ignition closely. As you look down at the coils, the green wire goes toward the right and connects to the points screw. The black wire gets grounded on the left. The reason I say this is because I made that mistake myself and wondered why I did not have spark. I don't think making the contact will hurt anything. You need to make sure that the coil magnet does not extend past the mounting block at the base of the armature. If the coil is positioned so the magnet extends past this base, the coil magnet will touch the inside surface of the flywheel. This may also cause your problems with spark because it may be shorting the electrical field. What class are you teaching and where? Maybe your students can earn extra credit by writing something up I can put on this website.
