Doug: I know you are asking Tom, but I have converted my 5.5 Evinrude successfully and I didnt reinstall the check valve. You need the back and forth positive/negative flow to work the fuel pump. One note, ensure you block off one passage as noted. I used just one means of blockage and it didnt hold up. I had to go back in and add some more, used a small cut our of pop can with sealant under the hardware. Tom, correct me if I am wrong. Also, I echo the sentiments below about thanks. I have gained lots of knowledge and help from the site and without it I would have not discovered this great hobby. I now have a 5.5 1958 Evinrude totally restored running like a top, a 1963 10HP Sportwin ready for rebuild and a 7.7HP (I think) mid 80's Merc ready for minimal service.
