1957--if it is firing than you are pulling enough I would think--spark may not be strong enough to ignite fuel, fuel may be old, compression may be low, coils may be erupted, plugs may be old, gapped wrong, or even the wrong plugs, usually these old motors need some tlc to live again--many times they are "rode hard and put away wet"--do a systematic inspection and clean, repair or replace the necessary parts.
